Die 17 Monate zwischen Anfang März 1933 und Anfang August 1934 gehören zu den schwierigsten Zeitabschnitten der Geschichte Österreichs im 20. Jahrhundert. Abgesehen vom Höhepunkt der Weltwirtschaftskrise und der Massenarbeitslosigkeit umreißt allein die rasche Abfolge von innen- und außenpolitischen Konfrontationen die Zerrissenheit der österreichischen Gesellschaft und das Schicksal Österreichs als Spielball der europäischen Mächtepolitik. So beschäftigt sich der neunte Band der ADÖ mit der Außenpolitik des Ballhausplatzes vor dem Hintergrund der Ausschaltung des Parlaments, der Partei- und Wahlverbote sowie der Gründung der Vaterländischen Front und behandelt die NS-Sprengstoffanschläge in Österreich, die wie die Ausweisung des Reichsjustizkommissärs Frank und die von Berlin verhängte „Tausend-Mark-Sperre“ zu einem schweren Konflikt der Alpenrepublik mit Deutschland führten. „Österreich im Banne des Faschismus“ dokumentiert freilich auch die Abschlüsse des Konkordats und der „Römischen Protokolle“ und damit die Zusammenarbeit der Regierung Dollfuß sowohl mit dem Vatikan als auch mit Italien und Ungarn. Zudem beleuchtet der Band die internationalen Reaktionen auf den Bürgerkrieg im Februar 1934 und den Putschversuch österreichischer Nationalsozialisten im Juli desselben Jahres.

The 17 months between the beginning of March 1933 and the beginning of August 1934 belong to the most difficult periods of Austrian history in the 20th century: The peak of the Great Depression in Central Europe and mass unemployment on the one hand and internal and external confrontations on the other were responsible for the most severe crisis of the Austrian republic since its foundation in the fall of 1918. So the ninth volume of the ADÖ series deals with the foreign policy of the Ballhausplatz in a time of Hitler’s seizure of power, the “self-elimination” of the Austrian Parliament and the end of democratic institutions, the foundation of the Vaterländische Front and the transformation of the parliamentary democracy into the Christian Ständestaat. It covers the Nazi terror in Austria and the economic restrictions of the Third Reich against his small neighbour state (the Tausend-Mark-Sperre) which led to a grave bilateral conflict. Österreich im Banne des Faschismus documents also the signing of the concordat and the “Roman Protocols” and therefore the cooperation of the Dollfuß administration with the Vatican as with Italy and Hungary as well. Besides the volume focuses on the international reactions concerning the civil war between Social Democrats and the authoritarian patriot government in February 1934, the assassination of Dollfuß and the failure of the Nazi July Putsch of the same year.
