Special issue on Population ageing and intergenerational redistribution
National Transfer Accounts (NTA) provide a detailed overview of the economy by age and gender. They include age and gender-specific information on the generation of income, its redistribution through public and private transfers, and its use for consumption and saving. In this article we provide an overview of methodology and data of National Transfer Accounts for European countries in 2010. The results highlight the large differences across countries, especially in the level of consumption relative to income, entry and exit from the labor force, and the importance of assets to provide for old age. The results facilitate our understanding of the consequences of population ageing and their differences across countries.
