Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs 16. Jahrgang Heft 1/2026, pp. 43-77, 2026/06/18

One way to understand the legal concept of late medieval and early modern man is to examine the language of legal texts. Texts offer many more opportunities than just the examination of legal terminology, which has been the primary focus area of the literature until today. It is also possible to examine legal collocations, word formation, meaning structure and linguistic pragmatics. If a complex examination of these areas is carried out on sources from a well-defined language user group, then, with appropriate source data, the elements of a linguistic community’s legal concept and the changes that occurred in them, emerge. This paper carries out this examination on the example of two towns of the former Kingdom of Hungary with German literacy, Ödenburg (Sopron) and Pressburg (Bratislava).
