Postmoderne und Pluralismus. Architektur der 1980er Jahre in Österreich
Church architecture of the 1980s in Austria remains largely unexplored, yet a look at the construction activity in Vienna reveals that the subject warrants closer examination. Following the surge of church building in the post-war decades, the demand for new structures in Vienna had been largely met. Nevertheless, several projects were still realized during the 1980s in housing developments and urban expansion zones. In terms of style and design, Viennese church architecture around and after 1980 was characterized by a distinct pluralism. On one hand, the influences of post-war Modernism, Brutalism, and Structuralism persisted; on the other, Postmodernism gained significant traction. Other buildings defy simple categorization into specific styles or eras. Often, it is the specific detail solutions, the use of color, or the choice of materials that identify these churches as definitive works of the 1980s.
